COVID, Colds, and Allergies, Oh My!

Fall is one of my absolute favorite seasons, mostly because it means I’m just that much closer to winter. I do love the air as it turns from sweaty to crispy. Yes, the air sweats, you might call it humidity, I call it sweaty air. I love seeing the leaves start to fall, not because the summer heat is drying them out, but because the trees are starting to shed for fall and winter. With all of that, we start the cold and flu season and kiddos are going back to school in-person. 

That sounds bizarre to even say, school in-person, because it’s been that kind of year.

We have been busy at our new house, trying to unpack and set things up to make it feel like home. Living surrounded by boxes is not my favorite thing. I usually try and tackle one room at a time. One of the very first areas I set up was my little apothecary. With all that this year has thrown at us, Covid and colds and allergies, I just couldn’t not set it up and be ready. It’s not 100% complete, but I feel much better knowing that the things I need are ready if needed. If you want to start your own natural medicine cabinet, start small. Add things as you need or think about it. 

Matt and Alyssa and their boys just recently battled a cold. So, we thought it would be a great idea to share some of our go to “Get Well” recipes.

Chili, Honey, and Lemon Tea

This one was taught to me almost 20 years ago. I was in college and suffering from a really nasty cold. A friend shared this with me, and I have used it ever since. 

            

What you need:  

·      ½ tsp dry chili flakes, or you can use cayenne powder, it tends to sink and not mix well

·      Juice from ½ of a lemon

·      Teaspoon of Honey, I prefer Manuka Honey or locally sourced honey

·      Hot water

Mix all ingredients and let steep for 3-5 minutes. Remove pepper flakes and sip. Drink a couple times a day. 

OPTIONAL: I like to add a teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar


 During this season I have been diffusing Thieves oil from Young Living as well, it helps to purify the air. 

Chicken soup really is good for a cold. Add some ginger for a little kick. 

As always, preventative steps are the best steps.  Take your probiotics and vitamins, go for a walk and eat a rainbow diet. 

Don’t forget to take time for your mental and emotional health, as well. Stress is a big immune suppressor. Even if you aren’t seeing others in person just yet, our friends are only a phone call away.
