Death Of The Great Idea

“When you're having a great idea every two minutes, maybe it’s time to raise your standards.”

Jeff Weathers

I recently started looking through old college journals. I love reminiscing about those years. They were some of the best I’ve ever had, and I came across this quote from one of my college friends. I read it and it seriously felt like a cannon ball hit me in the chest. I realized I was living this out, at this moment.

I am the Captain of the S.S. Great Idea and somewhere along the way I dropped anchor and got stuck.

Why do we do that? Why do we dare to dream and then just drop those ideas into a basket and put them on a shelf? Do we not care enough about the dreams, or are we too afraid, or just too complacent? I struggle to even answer that. I lack motivation to even answer that. Maybe life just got too busy too quick, I don’t know.

I realize one of my first blogs was to inspire those great ideas and get you guys thinking about the lost ones. Maybe I have too many. Maybe they are pretty mediocre ideas, or I need to update and revise some of them. Some, I bet, just need to be purged. I need to raise my standards and set sail again.

I mean, we live in freaking America! We can do just about anything we want, go the distance and live whatever dream we want. I think we all just lack motivation. We just get complacent and would rather binge watch Vampire Diaries than spend one hour working towards a goal.

If I had to describe my ideas recently, I would say chocolate cake. Which, don’t get me wrong, is pretty great. But, why not raise the standard and think chocolate cake filled with strawberries and chocolate gnash drizzled over top! Now THAT’S an even greater idea. I use cake as my metaphor because I LOVE cake. It seriously puts it into perspective for me.

Just think about whatever gets your wheels turning, and then ask yourself if you need to raise your standards. Why not go through our mental files and take stock of our “great” ideas and see what we come up with.

So let’s get practical. This is one of my “great” ideas. People who know me pretty well, know that I am a lover of all things natural, organic, recycled and repurposed. I have this great idea to sell things that line up with that. I’ve gone so far as to be a purveyor of Young Living and Norwex. I am one of many who attempts to sell such things. But why stop there, why not set my sights a little higher and take some classes that work me towards becoming an Alternative Medicine Practitioner? There is nothing wrong with peddling my wares, and if that is enough for you, go for it. But personally, I want to take this next level.

The best part of about something like this, you aren’t alone in it. Leave a comment about an idea you want to kick up a notch. We can encourage you in it. Alyssa, Jana and I are with you. Who knows, you may meet some like minded people and birth something even grander than what you had planned.
